VHDL steppermotor control

For the control of a stepper motor Muco Technologies BV has made a control in VHDL. A full PCB controller can be made with a small microprocessor. Applications e.g. in the vendor machines (coffee, snacks, etc.) VHDL is a hardware description language by which digital integrated circuits and programmable logic can be described and modeled in FPGA´s.

A FGPA is a chip with thousands of electronic circuits in it. FPGA stands for Field Programmable Gate Array the functionality of which can be programmed. The description of this functionality is usually done in VHDL. We have developed the stepper motor control in VHDL and the functionality was first tested in the simulator.

The control of the motor is fully implemented in the FPGA and the different parameters such as the number of steps, speed, acceleration and maximum current can be adjusted by means of an external microprocessor. After this the FPGA independently performs the desired profile and informs the microprocessor when it is ready. In this way the microprocessor is completely relieved, so that it can control 1 or more stepper motors and at the same time give priority to other tasks.
